Quotes to Get You Over the Hump

Y'all go 'head and get over Wednesday's hump! How ya doin'?

A little mood music today that is in celebration of powerful words. Today I present A Tribe Called Quest's Wordplay.

I've been collecting quotes forever.  I have years of them that I store in a file on my computer.  I have a board on Pinterest filled with lots of brilliant quotes in beautiful fonts, but I'm gonna start sharing from the beginning of my favorite quotes - the first page of my multi-paged list.  There's all kinds of quotes - spiritual, funny, wise, raunchy.  Something for everybody. I've given credit when I know the source (such a grad school thing; ha!).

I'll be back from time to time with more. Maybe there's something on my list that speaks to you.  I'm a lover and collector of quotes, so leave one for me in the comments section if you're so inclined.

On Basic Life Wisdom

Like the old folks say, don't be so open-minded that your brain falls out. ~ I LIVE for old Southern sayings!

“There is joy in every breath, even when it hurts.” ~Anika Noni Rose, actress, Tiana (Prince & the Frog), FAMU alumna

"In the midst of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer" - Albert Camus

“Tough times don’t last but tough people do.” - A.C. Green

Stop f*cking people who can f*ck you harder. ~Don't know who said it, but I love 'em. Pardon my French.

On Academia
“Organization becomes procrastination.” ~ my colleague Renee; helpful during those times when I blow my time "rearranging" my articles when I should be writing.

We cannot have a conversation about race that revolves around an axis of Black pathology. ~ Dr. Greg Carr, VERY instrumental to my research on education and equity

"Cry it out, recalibrate, get organized and get back at it because it sounds like you have a lot of work to do." ~ Monica Mingo, Rantings of a Creole Princess, one of my FAVORITE blogs

On Spirituality
"Use me 'til you use me up. That's what I tell God...That is what my prayer is" ~Oprah

God be glorified, the devil be terrified, and the people be edified. Amen ~ prayer by Thema Bryant-Davis, poet, brilliant minister, Ph.D, overall beast, friend in my head

On Love
“(In Arabic) “The word shams (sun) is feminine, and qamar (moon) is masculine. The sun burns itself out to give light and life to everything around…[the moon] within itself has no light; it radiates the brilliance of the sun. So when we shine as men, the implication is that we are reflecting the glorious light of our women.”- Shaykh Abdallah Adhami

On Friendship
"We should always have three friends in our lives—one who walks ahead who we look up to and follow; one who walks beside us, who is with us every step of our journey; and then, one who we reach back for and bring along after we’ve cleared the way." ~First Lady Michelle Obama

I don't know about y'all, but I feel lifted! I think I wrote this post for myself.

Until next time . . . Y'all be encouraged!

  1. Love these quotes. A few I was familiar with, but there are some new ones that are gems!
